After spending time at school starting his interest for woodturning on a Myford lathe, James helped his father build a treadle lathe from a lorry flywheel and a Sturmey Archer 3-speed for its axle.
James's appetite for creating things out of wood had been whetted. Woodturning took a back seat for 27 years, whilst he completed his career in the Nottingham Police Force, retiring in 1983 In 1984 James had a two-day course with Keith Rowley; which was followed with a lot of hard work and perseverance - and after a few initial mistakes, his natural ability shone through.
He then went through a period of selling and demonstrating at craft fairs; when established he turned professional. He now produces some very fine and unusual works and displays in many galleries. His work includes bowls, platters, lamps, thimbles and lace bobbins and also complete bowls of fruit. Commissions are considered.
James also gives demonstrations to woodturning clubs and gives one-to-one tuition at his own workshop.
